So, You're A New Leader... Now What?
Congratulations and Thank You for becoming a new leader in the world's largest youth movement...Scouting! Whether you have experience as a Scout, you've been a leader before, or this is your very first experience in Scouting, getting the proper training is essential in providing a quality program that achieves Scouting's aims and purposes. Our goal is to provide every Scout with a trained leader; and to provide every leader with training.
The following information will help you determine which courses you need to become a Trained Leader.

This is a quick, on-your-own session that will give you the information you need to get started right now.
For Cub Scout Leaders there are two options, we recommend you do both:
- Option 1. Go online at http://olc.scouting.org/info/csfs.html.
- Option 2. Watch the fast start video for Cub Scout Leaders. Many packs have their own copy, if yours doesn't call the Council Service Center at 634-1584 and ask about borrowing one.
Boy Scout Leaders also have two options, both are recommended:

This two hour training is for all leaders(Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, or Venture) presents an overview of the core elements of Scouting and covers the following topics:
- What Are the Goals I'm Trying to Accomplish?
- How Do Youth Grow and Develop?
- Where Do I Fit In?
- Where Do I Get Help?
- Who Pays for Scouting?
- How Do I Keep Scouting Safe?
- Your Bridge Into Scouting.
This training is designed to provide your knowledge about your position. After completing New Leader Essentials and this session, Cub Scout Leaders (except Webelos Den Leaders & Assistants, who must also complete outdoor training) and Boy Scout Troop Committee Leaders may wear the "Trained" emblem for the position in which they are trained. If you are changing leadership positions, take the session specific for the new position.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (2 1/2 to 3 hours).
- Tiger Cub Den Leader

- Webelos Leader
- Cubmaster/Assistant Cubmaster
- Pack Committee Member
Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training (3 - 2 1/2 hour sessions).
- Session 1: Getting Started: The Role of the Scoutmaster in a Boy-led Troop
- Session 2: Session 2: Lighting the Fire: The Outdoor Program and The Advancement Program
- Session 3: Session 3: Keeping It Going: Program Planning and Troop Administration.
Troop Committee Challenge (3 hours). Learn the role of the Troop Committee and the roles of each of the members of the committee. Learn how the committee supports the Boy-led Troop.
Venture Leader Training (5 hours). For Venture Leaders and Committee Members. Learn about working with young adults, leadership, Venture program awards and recognition, and resources & program planning.
Outdoor training is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters and is supplemented for Webelos Leaders. After completing New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and this course, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters may wear the "Trained" emblem.
BALOO: Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (One all day Saturday session).
- This training is an entry level course for Cub Scout packs. Packs are strongly encouraged to provide a camping activity; this training is REQUIRED for the adult in the pack who will lead the camping activity. (The tour permits will not be approved without at least one BALOO trained adult.)
IOLS: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (One weekend, Friday - Sunday afternoon session).
- This training is REQUIRED for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to complete their training. Learn to teach and be able to sign-off the outdoor requirements to help Scouts achieve the rank of First Class. This course is also REQUIRED for Webelos Leaders who wish to take their Webelos on patrol overnighters.
- Youth Protection training is REQUIRED for ALL LEADERS; in this 75-minute session you'll learn about the 3 R's: Recognize, Resist, and Report, and you'll learn the BSA Guidelines to Youth Protection. This training is now available online in both English and Spanish, and there is a new version just for Venture Leaders. Go to the Ute District Training page.
- Health & Safety is also a 75-minute session and is REQUIRED training for a unit to obtain a Tour Permit. You'll learn about the "Sandwich Principle," the "Sweet 16 of BSA Safety," and the "Risk Zone."
