Ute District Newsletter

November - December 2007

Its Recharter Time

It is time to recharter again. We have already started handing out unit recharter packets. If you have not received yours contact Michael Chang or Kyle smith. LDS units' deadline is November 18th. For everyone else, the deadline is the January roundtable.

Lady Liberty Project

During Scout Week in February of 1950 the Pikes Peak council donated to the "Citizens of Colorado Springs" a replica of the statue of liberty which was located in front of city hall until a remodeling project several years ago. Recently re-discovered, the statue is in dire need of restoration before it is returned to its original location.

In addition to other fund raising efforts, we would like to have Scouts and their families participate in the fund raising effort at the unit level… a dime here, a dime there… as was done in 1950. We also need volunteers to serve on the committee.

For more information, committee volunteering, suggestions, etc., please contact Doug Nixon at 574-1972.

Friends of Scouting

We would like to thank every unit that participated in the 2007 Friends of Scouting drive. With the help of everyone in the district we were able to have a successful campaign. Now is the time to plan for your 2008 presentation!

  • Pick a date for your unit's FOS presentation during the first quarter of 2008. This should be during a court of Honor or blue and Gold banquet that is attended by most parents
  • Identify a unit point of contact to interact with the FOs presenter
  • Contact Kyle Smith (219-2915), ksmith@bsamail.org, or Michael Chang (219-2907), mchang@bsamail.org,with your FOS date and POC

Ute Spring 2008 Camporee Planning Meetings

Help with planning of the spring, 2008 Camporee and be a part of another great event. The camporee planning committee meets before roundtable at 6:00 PM.

Important Eagle Project Notes

We have found several areas of weaknesses in eagle projects coming before the advancement committee for approval. These issues may delay the approval of the project.

  • A journal or log of the time the scout as well as others have put into the project needs to be included. All time spent planning, traveling, and meeting with individuals regarding the project needs to be logged by date and amount of time spent each date. Individuals involved also need to be logged. A log of the project day needs to be included as well.
  • Scouts also need to research the cost of materials for their project, even if all the materials are donated or are covered in the budget of the benefiting organization. This means ALL materials necessary for the project, down to nuts and bolts. Shopping.com is an excellent resource.
  • Youth Protection guidelines must be followed during the project. List which Youth protection trained adult will be in attendance at the event. There must be 2 adults present at each project day.
  • If donations for food and materials wil be sought, sample letters of what will be submitted to organizations need to be included. Any donation received should be acknowledged with a thank you letter.

Join Scouting Night

First of all we would like to thank every pack in the district for their timely submissions of date and times of their Join Scout night events for this fall. Due to your hard work and planning, the district is tracking better than last year for Cub Scout registrations.

Unit Commissioners Wanted!

Ute District is in need of Unit Commissioners. If you are a Scouter who would like to share your wealth of experience with other units, and if you are looking to increase the impact you have in Scouting, then WE WANT YOU! Please contact Lou Lemesany, Ute District Commissioner, if you would like to be a Unit Commissioner!
