Pikes Peak Council 2008 Klondike

The 1896 discovery of gold on the Bonanza Creek in the Yukon Territory of what is now Alaska, lured thousands of hardy men and women to struggle over the Chilkoot Pass and down the Yukon River to the Klondike Goldfields. These stampeders to the region risked their lives to brave the rigor of the North to make their fortunes. The Northwest Mounted Police required that all people had to carry their grubstake, one year's provisions, with them. For some, this meant more than 20 trips over the Chilkoot Pass carrying their heavy backpacks. Driven by the hopes of unbelievable riches, they overcame great obstacles just to find out that they were too late!

Join us as we relive the adventure of those times! Like the would-be fortune seekers of a hundred years ago, we'll retrace their route over our own “Chilkoot Pass”. Patrols will build a Klondike sledge to carry their provisions along the “Chilkoot Trail” at Camp A. You and your Scouts will be challenged to use your Scouting skills to traverse the “Chilkoot Trail” to earn your own fortune in “gold nuggets” by completing a series of events that replicate the hardships encountered by the original fortune seekers. (See Activity Packet – published separately - for more details) The trail is difficult but unlike the harsh winter of 1896-1897, in 2008 it will be not only cold but fun. The “gold nuggets earned on your trek will be used to bid on real treasures at the Saturday Night Auction. As always - our treasure lies in the adventure itself!
